Welcome to Bristol Zoo Project, a forward-thinking zoo run by conservation and education charity, Bristol Zoological Society. For more than 185 years, we've been on the cutting edge of what it means to run a conservation-focused zoo.
Here are a few things you might not know about us…
85% of the animals we care for at Bristol Zoo Project are both threatened, and part of targeted conservation programmes
Threatened species are at high risk of extinction in the wild. Currently 85% of the species we care for are classified in this way. Over the next 10 years we aim to bring more threatened species into our care, increasing this figure to 90%. We believe keeping threatened species in zoos is essential to save them – through conservation breeding, research and inspiring visitors to act to protect them.
We carry out critical conservation work across four continents
Our reach goes far beyond our zoo. We work in 9 countries, including the UK, where we direct 20 field conservation projects with over 30 local partner organisations. Through these, we conserve and protect some of the world’s most threatened species.
We are at the forefront of animal welfare
Our industry-leading animal welfare research and practice has positively influenced zoo welfare at a national and international level. We also work in the emerging field of conservation welfare, developing new methods for ensuring animal welfare during field conservation activities, including breeding programmes.
We inspire the conservationists of the future through education programmes, from pre-school to PhD
Bristol Zoological Society delivers seven conservation-related higher education degrees in partnership with universities and colleges. We also welcome 16,000 each year school children for a visit each year, including over 1,400 funded visits through our Access to Nature scheme.
